Abstract

Analysis of the different Mechanics used in the Space Closure in the Straight Arc Technique.

Most of the difficulties encountered in the management of the Straight Arch (although they are not the only ones) are related to the control of the sagittal movements of the Space Closer for cases with extractions. This can be performed by two different maneuvers: Ansas Opening and Recovery Mechanics and Sliding Mechanics. The DKL (Double Key Loop) allows the orthodontist to develop both mechanics while the Arch with Posts only the second one. Every specialist should know precisely the correct handling of the different resources-tools (its variants) that the therapeutic arsenal has, such as the value of the optimal forces used, as well as knowing how to predict the expected biomechanical response according to the case as well as the unwanted movements generated in this second phase of orthodontic treatment in the different teeth or dental groups involved, since the lack of suitability can delay, alter and even prevent the achievement of the final objectives of our treatment plan. Skeletal Anchorage through interradicular micro-implant has undoubtedly been the most significant contribution to the advancement of these mechanics, minimizing unwanted movements (parasites) on the dental anchorage units, something that has always been difficult to control using "conventional" mechanics. Although "conventional" space closure with Arch Post or DKL have been used for years as mechanical resources with acceptable results, they did not always guarantee a predictable biomechanical response. Many times due to lack of knowledge and/or inadequate manipulation by the operator, but on other occasions it is impossible to avoid Newton's third law (principle of action and reaction) present in every movement. The skeletal anchorage came to control it, being one of the most significant contributions that orthodontics has had since Dr. Roth introduced the pre-adjusted appliance, which makes it a recommendable tool to incorporate in our clinical practice.
