Abstract

We consider pregnancy to be a physiological state of women that presents various changes at a biological level, where the various devices and systems of the woman are involved. The alteration in some of them and the appearance of diseases can be triggering factors for various adverse effects in the process, which can involve both the mother and the baby.

Some of the unwanted effects such as preeclampsia, premature birth and low birth weight of the baby could be associated with various inflammatory processes that may be key in their production. One of the known sources of inflammation, which could impact these negative pregnancy experiences, is periodontal disease.

Our objective is to know the recent evidence in relation to periodontal disease and the adverse effects of pregnancy, and by evidencing them, propose possible promotion and prevention actions by the health team, in order to improve the periodontal health of the future mother and reduce the possibility of suffering unwanted effects during pregnancy.
