Abstract

Prevention of Temporomandibular Disorders in early childhood

Temporomandibular disorders affect a significant percentage of young people and adults. Its etiology is one of the most controversial and extensively studied topics by dental clinicians and researchers. It is agreed in most of the studies that dysgnacias constitute one of the main predisposing factors for it. The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is one of the most complex joints in humans. Its bone component is formed by the mandibular condyles and the glenoid cavities of the temporal bones. The location of these cavities depends on an ontogenetic phenomenon of cranial flexion, which places them in a subcranial position, allowing correct mandibular function. When this process does not happen in this way, or when there are different kinetics in both temporal bones, cranial asymmetries can occur that predispose to joint malfunction. From orthopedics, there are numerous tools that allow us to work on the skull base in initial treatment, before the age of six. These therapeutic maneuvers allow us to channel growth in a functional and balanced way, seeking the health of the entire stomatognathic system, including the joint. We consider this a true prevention in joint disorders.
